Potty Time Success Chart

Miss Mega, my toddler, is loving her Potty Time Success Chart
She filled it up today :-)
You can download your own Success Chart for free from the Potty Time homepage.  I have a penchant for laminating things so of course ours is laminated so we can use it over and over again.  Pair it with some sticker's your child loves and you're ready to go!

Potty Training Corner & Books

Today we had the first Potty Time Workshop and I think it went rather well.  It was an interesting time of sharing ideas and stories.  One thing we talked about today is how to set up the potty area so all the things you need are within arm's reach.  Here is our little set-up:
The top pocket is where we keep the books to read while waiting.  There is also a pack of flushable wipes.  The second pocket has clean diapers and on the bottom liners for cloth diapers hang next to the paper towel for cleaning up accidents.

Here are some of our favorite books to haev on hand while potty training:

A Potty for Me!: A Lift-the-Flap Instruction Manual by Karen Katz
ISBN-13: 978-0689874239

Too Big for Diapers (Sesame Street)
ISBN-13: 978-0375810459

Potty by Leslie Patricelli
ISBN-13: 978-0763644765

Hopkins Uses the Potty
ISBN-13: 9781936859115

Potty Time Workshop

Next week we will have 2 Potty Time workshops at Hana House.  The first is on Tuesday, March 13th and the second is on Saturday, March 17th.  I am leading the same program on both days.  This workshop is a chance to learn about different options in potty training kids.  There are so many ways to do it: starting from birth or when a baby can sit alone or starts signing or turns a certain age... This workshop will encourage and equip parents to make potty training into a positive experience for both parent and child.
 Are you interested in coming?

Please contact Hana House for further details!

Ready For Potty Time?

A while back I posted about how we used (and you can use!) signs to help with potty training here.  Since that time Two Little Hands, the company which makes Signing Time, has created a wonderful new resource called Potty Time.

We are love, love, loving Potty Time!

Potty Time preview from Signing Time on Vimeo.

Mega, who is 19 months old, has been using the potty inconsistently for a while so the release of the potty time products is perfect timing for her.  Zilla, the 4 yr. old big brother, also loves the music and happily sings/signs along when the video is on.
The kid's favorite song by far is "Let's Celebrate".  The words are general enough to be used for most any celebration and with the upbeat music it is perfect for a kitchen dance party to burn some of their extra energy!

Another great feature is the free Potty Time App.  It includes a success chart, game, book and other useful features.  Here the kids are playing the memory game.

Now they are "reading" the book about Hopkins using the potty.

Mega enjoys the Potty Time watch, which plays music to remind her it is time to use the potty.
While there are many "add-ons" you can choose to buy in the Potty Time series there are also many freebies, making it an economical option for everyone.  Check out the  PT Blog too as the PT experts are doing a great job of collecting information and resources to address nearly every potty training situation!

Coming Soon: Potty Time!

Coming soon: Potty Time!

I am really looking forward to using Potty Time with my daughter.  She is 14 months old and just starting to tell me when she needs to go potty.

One of the most popular topics of discussion at my Baby Signing Time classes is how and when to do potty training.  Since most of the babies who come to my classes are the first born, the moms have yet to experience potty training.  There are so many ways and ideas. I will share what has worked for us and encourage them to think about their own situation and what my work for them.  On my other blog I've started a potty training topic.  You can check here for the first post which shares our current method.

There is also an older post on this blog which is more specific to what we used with my son.  You can find that post here.

Signs for Potty Training

Today we reached another milestone! My 14 month old daughter came tonight to tell us that she needed to go potty. She did the sign, pointed to the bathroom and then went down the hall. I followed her, helped her get undressed and she pointed to the big toilet. After helping her up she went pee in the toilet! This is the first time she has initiated using the potty and actually gone. All she needs is 3 simple signs - potty, more, and all done!
I hope that this will soon mean the end of dirty diapers for us!

Potty Training + Signing

Recently I've been asked by a few different people about using signs to help with potty training. From my own experience I can tell you it is possible for babies under 1 yr. old to tell you that they need to go potty - if they are given the word (sign) to use!

I love the Signing Time and Baby Signing Time product lines. They are my first choice for resources, however, there are also other places with helpful items too.

For potty training we've been using the Baby Signs produced "Potty Train" set. http://pottytrainwithbabysigns.com/ It's a bit corny but the signs used are from ASL and my son seems to like it. It uses only a few basic signs (6 maybe?) like "potty", "more" and "all done". It can be found on Amazon.co.jp here.

*Please keep in mind that not all Baby Signs products use ASL signs - some are made up - so the quality and usefulness of the products varies greatly.

Parents magazine has an online article with the basic potty signs pictured and described. Here it is:
http://www.parents.com/toddlers-preschoolers/potty-training/tips/potty-train-with-sign-language/

Of course a post about potty training resources would not be complete unless it pointed you to the Baby Signing Time "Diaper Dance" song!

If you have any questions I can be reached at heidi@signingtimeacademy.com

Please e-mail me if you live in Japan but are not in a location where classes are offered. I can help you get started with Baby Signing Time and/or Signing Time.

日本に住んでいて、近くに手話のクラスがない場合などは、メールをくだされば、質問に答えたり、皆さんが Baby Signing Time や Signing Time を始めるのをお手伝いできると思います。
